Why Study Actuarial Studies?

Areas of Employment

Actuaries employed by a life insurance company are responsible for the financial soundness of the company. Among their many areas of responsibility are: 

  • the design new types of life insurance and superannuation policies;
  • the determination of premium and bonus rates using the appropriate mortality and disability tables;
  • the analysis of investments and formulate investment policy;
  • and the development of computer systems.
Consulting actuaries provide fee-based professional services, and in this role they 
  • advise on the design and financing of superannuation funds and other employee benefit schemes;
  • act for companies which do not employ actuaries;
  • carry out financial projections for general insurance and finance companies;
  • give statistical and financial advice in many other areas.
The increasing technical sophistication of the investment and finance sector has created a demand for actuaries with strong financial and risk management skills.
